Visitor Highlights
Walk around the town – see our old buildings built from local stone and catalogued in our heritage book prepared by council. Take a look at our war memorial built and opened in 2021. Further your walk to Yanyarrie Whim a stone tank and slate trough built early in our pastoral history.
Johnburgh Loop Tour – A scenic self-drive tour of 80kms encircling the Oladdie Hills that follows the local post-delivery route. There are many photo and artist opportunities of gum creeks, slate outcrops and building ruins. Visit and read about the deserted towns of Johnburgh and Belton. See a variety of vegetation, pine stands, mallee scrub and blue bush.
Visit the town mural – near the visitor information bay at the Memorial Hall – it tells our story of an independent rural community with pastoral, mining, railway and farming history. The murals at the swimming pool depict a typical Flinders Ranges scene while the entrance wall shows a delightful scene of “Possum Magic “ characters.
Horseshoe Range and Moockra climb – Self drive tour into the Horseshoe Range and stretch your legs for a walk to take on the Moockra climb. Sign the book stored in the cairn and take in the spectacular views. Rated an easy to moderate walk. A detailed map and directions are available at the caravan park.
Historic Hammond – Take a drive to Hammond. Of interest is the wide street and the façade of some buildings untouched and presented as they were in the 1950’s. The Catholic Church was rebuilt and enlarged in 1905 from the first Catholic church 5 miles away on banks of Coonatto Creek.
4WD tours – varying difficulties are available on properties at Almerta, Bendleby Ranges, Coonatto, Horseshoe Rim and Horseshoe Top-End. For details, enquire at the Caravan Park.
